Andy Dufresne, a hotshot banker, has murdered his wife and her secret lover and is sent to Shawshank Prison for the lifetime. He is very isolated and lonely at first, but over the years, he retains hope and eventually gains the respect of his fellow inmates, especially longtime convict "Red" Redding, a black marketeer, and becomes influential within the prison. Set in the 1940's, the film shows how Andy, with the help of his friend Red, the prison entrepreneur, turns out to be a most unconventional prisoner.

The Shawshank Redemption is the ultimate feel good film. Everything from the performances to the music is just perfect. It's not particularly original, it's stolen ideas from nearly every prison break film there is, but it doesn't matter, The Shawshank Redemption is beautiful and never gets boring. Brilliant!

Wow...this movie was sooo beautiful and really touched my heart! Tim Robbin's performance was just excellent! The story wasn't predictable...I totally didn't expect the story to end this way and that's one thing I loved most. Who would have thought that Andy was planning on escaping for so long? I also loved the fact that this movie really shows what goes on in many prisons in this world. Many innocent people die in prisons, Andy was the lucky one and because he was smart, he eventually got his revenge too. A movie you shouldn't miss, classic!

for violence and language. Shawshank Redemption is a master piece of work by Frank Darabont who did an exceptional job in adapting Stephen King's 1982 novel Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption to film.( He did the Green Mile also?)The film contains great cinematography and music with an amazing cast, Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman were amazing. No wonder the film was nominated for the Academy Awards.

i feel like the only person who thinks this movie is unbelievably overrated. morgan freeman is great as usual. features a couple of wonderfully subtle performances, but the great majority of this movie is entirely the opposite of subtle. it's, in fact, ridiculous. i mean, using the rock hammer to tunnel out of prison? hiding the hammer in the bible? hiding crap under the tree? the heartfelt beach reunion? it was just too much for me.

I am usually not that fond of drama films but the portrayal of the characters and the amazing script made it a perfect translation from the Stephen King book. Morgan Freeman gives one of his best performances in this movie and actually makes you believe him as a jail smuggler, better than Chris Rock in the Longest Yard ever did.
